ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant. It's trained on a large dataset with a knowledge cutoff, and while it can browse the web, that's not its core identity. Its strength is versatile conversational AI — it can write, code, analyze, roleplay, summarize, and reason across many domains.

Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine. It's built primarily to replace Google for research queries. When you ask it something, it runs a live web search, reads the results, synthesizes an answer, and shows you exactly which sources it used. That source citation is the whole point — it's what makes Perplexity genuinely trustworthy for research in a way that most AI chatbots aren't.

The comparison only makes sense if you're trying to use one of them as your default "AI assistant." If you're looking for different things, you'd run both — which many people do.

Citations that actually link somewhere. Perplexity shows numbered citations inline and lists the sources at the bottom. Click them and you land on the actual page. This is fundamental if you're doing research — you can verify the claim and read deeper.

Current information. Perplexity searches live. Ask it about something that happened last week and it knows. ChatGPT has a training cutoff and its web browsing, while functional, is slower and less reliably integrated.

Speed for research queries. Perplexity is optimized for fast retrieval and synthesis. It's often faster than a Google search for questions with a clear answer, because you get the answer directly instead of clicking through five pages.

Academic and technical sources. The Perplexity Academic mode specifically retrieves papers, arxiv preprints, and peer-reviewed sources. For researchers, this is significantly better than asking ChatGPT to summarize academic topics (which it may do with fabricated citations).

Model choice. Perplexity Pro lets you switch between Claude, GPT-4o, and Gemini as the underlying model for your searches — a useful hedge if you want quality synthesis without picking a camp.

Creative and generative tasks. Write me a short story, generate some marketing copy, brainstorm 20 tagline options — ChatGPT is purpose-built for this. Perplexity can try, but it's not the right tool.

Code generation. ChatGPT (and especially Claude, which you might consider comparing separately) is much better at writing and debugging code than Perplexity. Perplexity can search Stack Overflow answers, but that's not the same as reasoning about code structure.

Multi-turn dialogue. Long conversations where each message builds on the last are ChatGPT's strength. Perplexity is optimized for discrete queries, not extended reasoning threads.

Complex reasoning tasks. Asking something that requires logic, math, or inference — not retrieval — is where ChatGPT (and especially OpenAI's o-series models) excel. Perplexity retrieves; it doesn't reason deeply.

Offline or internal knowledge. If your question doesn't benefit from web search — analyzing a document you upload, discussing philosophy, writing code — ChatGPT is the right choice.

Perplexity's free tier is genuinely useful — unlimited searches with a daily cap on "pro" searches. The Pro tier removes caps, adds model choice, and unlocks better file analysis.

ChatGPT's free tier has gotten stronger with GPT-4o, but the best features (extended context, image generation, voice mode) are Plus-only.

things to know

Perplexity still hallucinates. Less than pure language models, but it happens. If the web source is wrong, Perplexity will confidently relay the wrong information with a citation. Always click through on anything consequential.

ChatGPT browse is not the same as Perplexity. ChatGPT can visit websites but its citation experience is worse. The results are less reliable, the sources are less consistently shown, and it feels bolted on rather than core.

Perplexity's chat quality is mediocre. If you use Perplexity for conversation rather than search, you'll notice the model feels comparatively shallow. It's not trying to win at conversation.

Both are improving fast. The gap between them on any specific feature changes every few months. Try both on your actual workflow before deciding.
