for: anything where a real photograph matters, and any commercial use where you want model releases and an indemnity behind the licence
skip if: illustrations, 3D, and abstract or conceptual imagery where AI generation beats searching — and where you want to generate the missing shot rather than find it
the important difference isn't quality, it's indemnity. unsplash+ carries model and property releases plus a $10,000 indemnification — that's what you're buying, and for commercial work it's worth more than the images. lummi's library is AI-generated, free for most of it, with a licence permitting personal and commercial use without attribution, but no equivalent legal backstop. lummi also generates, which unsplash doesn't: if the shot doesn't exist, lummi makes it.
unsplash for real photographs and for any commercial work where someone might ask about rights. the model releases and $10,000 indemnity on unsplash+ are the product; the pictures are almost incidental.
lummi for illustration, 3D and conceptual imagery — and for when the image you need doesn't exist and you'd rather generate it than keep searching.
verdict as of september 2026.
what you're actually comparing
Lummi is AI-generated stock. Most of the library is free to browse and download, the licence permits personal and commercial use without attribution, and — unlike a conventional library — you can generate new images when nothing fits. Its strongest material is illustration, 3D and abstract work rather than photorealism.
Unsplash is a photo library, now owned by Getty Images. The free collection is vast and genuinely free. Unsplash+ is a paid tier over a smaller, exclusive collection where every image has model and property releases in place, backed by a $10,000 indemnification.
One gives you more images. The other gives you cover when someone asks whether you were allowed to use them.
pricing, honestly
Lummi: most of the library free, with limited AI credits. Pro is $15/month, or $10/month billed yearly — full library, higher resolutions, premium images, advanced editing, unlimited image generation with five fast generations per hour and three video generations. Max is $48/month, or $32/month yearly — unlimited video and 60 fast generations per hour.
Unsplash: the free library stays free. Unsplash+ is $12/month billed monthly, or $4/month billed yearly ($48/year). That annual rate is flagged as a limited launch special at 66% off, and Unsplash explicitly warns that promotional pricing may change and renewal at that rate isn't guaranteed — so treat $4 as an introductory number, not a durable one.
On sticker price Unsplash+ is currently cheaper, and dramatically so annually. But they're not really competing for the same money: Lummi's paid tier buys generation capacity, Unsplash+ buys legal certainty. If you need both, they're both cheap.
edge: unsplash on price today, with the caveat that the $4 rate is promotional.
where unsplash wins
Indemnity and releases. Model and property releases with a $10,000 indemnification on Unsplash+. For advertising, packaging or anything a client's legal team reviews, nothing on Lummi's side answers this.
Real photographs of real things. People, places, products, textures. AI still struggles with the specific and the mundane in ways that matter.
The free library is enormous. Decades of contributions. For most blog posts and decks you'll never need the paid tier at all.
No generated-image discomfort. Some clients and some audiences react badly to AI imagery, especially of people. A photograph avoids the conversation entirely.
Cheaper right now. $4/month annually against $10, though that's promotional.
where lummi wins
You can make the missing image. This is the structural advantage. Searching a library ends in "close enough"; generating ends in what you asked for.
Illustration and 3D. Lummi's best material is in categories where photo libraries are weak and expensive. Abstract backgrounds, conceptual spots, 3D objects.
Most of it is free with commercial rights and no attribution. A genuinely generous default for a library of this size.
Speed. Describing what you want beats scrolling page four of search results, especially for something conceptual you can't easily put into keywords.
No stock-photo cliché problem. Because the images are generated, you're less likely to find the same one on three competitors' landing pages.
things to know before you pick
"Commercial use allowed" is not the same as indemnified. Both licences permit commercial use. Only one promises to defend you if a claim arrives. Know which risk you're carrying, particularly for AI-generated images of people.
Don't use AI-generated people in regulated or sensitive contexts. Healthcare, finance, anything implying endorsement. A generated face has no release behind it and no person who consented.
Unsplash is Getty-owned. The free tier hasn't gone away, but its steward's core business is selling paid licences. Worth factoring into anything long-lived.
Unsplash+'s $4 is a launch promo. Budget for the $12 monthly rate, because Unsplash says renewal at the promotional price isn't guaranteed.
Neither permits reselling the images. You can use them in your work; you can't repackage them as a competing library or a template pack whose value is the images.
Most people should use both. Free Unsplash for photographs, free Lummi for illustration, and pay only when a specific project needs indemnity or generation volume. Neither is a subscription you need by default.
