Runway builds its own models — Gen-4.5, Gen-4, Act-Two — and wraps them in something closer to a production application than a generator. Workflows, professional export formats, custom voices, watermark removal. It expects you to learn it and gets more useful as you do.

Higgsfield is an aggregator with a studio interface on top. It puts 15+ third-party video models behind one subscription — Sora 2, Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0 among them — alongside 70+ cinematic camera presets and mode-based studios (Cinema, Marketing, Soul ID) that handle a lot of the directing decisions for you.

The real question is whether you want one model you know deeply, or every model the week it ships.

Runway: Free gives 125 one-time credits. Standard is $12/user/month on annual billing (~$15 monthly) for 625 credits/month and unlocks the full model library plus watermark removal. Pro is $28 (~$35) for 2,250 credits and adds ProRes, PNG sequences and transparent exports. Max is $76 (~$95) for 9,500 credits, with rollover for one month and early model access.

Higgsfield: Free tier, Starter $19/month (~200 credits), Plus $59 (~1,000), Team $79, Ultra $129, Scale ~$169 (~3,000).

The headline prices favour Runway, but the credit maths is where it really separates. Runway's cost is arithmetic: Gen-4.5 is 12 credits per second of video, Gen-4 Turbo is 5. You can budget a month before you start. Higgsfield's cost depends entirely on which model you pick — Kling 3.0 runs about 6 credits a video while Sora 2 or Veo 3.1 cost 40–70. The same 1,000-credit plan is either 150 videos or 15, and you find out by spending.

Export formats that survive a handoff. ProRes, PNG sequences, transparency. If your output goes into someone's timeline rather than straight to a feed, this alone decides it.

Predictable costs. Credits per second, published. You can quote a client before you generate.

It rewards mastery. One model family, learned properly, beats scattered access to ten you each know slightly. Runway has the depth to be worth that investment.

Cheaper at every comparable tier. $12 against $19 at entry, and the gap widens in the middle.

Cheap models make it cheap. If Kling 3.0 at ~6 credits does what you need, Higgsfield's volume is excellent. The expense only appears when you reach for Sora or Veo.

things to know before you pick

Work out your cost per finished video, not per credit. This is the single most expensive mistake in AI video. Pick the model you'd actually use, find its per-generation cost, and divide your plan by it. The answers vary by an order of magnitude.

Budget for waste. AI video is iterative and most generations get thrown away. Whatever you calculate you need, assume three to five times that while you're learning what prompts work.

Aggregators depend on other people's terms. Higgsfield's access to any given model exists at that provider's discretion. A model you build a workflow around can change price, change behaviour, or disappear.

Check commercial licensing per model. With an aggregator this isn't one answer — each underlying model has its own terms. If the output is going in an ad, verify the specific model, not the platform.

Neither replaces an editor. Both generate clips. Assembling, grading and sound are still your job or someone else's, and that's usually where the real time goes.
